Newport, Rhode Island Speed Traps
Maple Ave., near Hillside Ave.
In vicinity is dirt lot, where trap sometimes exists. Speed limit is 25 mph on two-lane road connecting Connell Hwy. and West Main Rd.
State Route 138 near Newport Bridge
Staties just going back and forth over the bridge, many times turning around to get you. Just got one for going 58 in the pathetically appointed 40mph. During the day time traffic moves from 55 to 65. Its a joke. And btw that hill is hard to climb in 5th gear, so you kind of have to hit it with some authority.

State Route 114 near Connell Hwy Circle
Ticky trap. Heading South On RI 114 toward the Newport Grand and Newport Bridge, you actually transition from Middletown to Newport at the bottom of the hill. Speed limit changes to 25 MPH. It’s nearly impossible to go that slow. FYI – within the city of Newport, the Maximum speed limit is 25 MPH or less Everywhere. The cops hide in a driveway to the city materials yard on the left at the bottom of the hill on the drivers leFort
(Connell HWY – RI Rt. 114)
Of course, drivers heading north in the opposite direction, the same trap is used by the Middletown police.
Watch out!

State Route 138 near JT Connell High Way
At the end of the Newport bridge going eastbound on 138, you’ll take the Fall River exit (not the Newport Downtown exit). After you get off the ramp, the speed limit is 25 MPH. When you head towards the next ramp, the speed limit rises to 30 MPH (on the ramp continuing to 138). There are two traps; (1) They hide at the end of the exit near the next ramp. (2) They blatently hide, as soon as you exit the first ramp, on the breakdown lane.
Memorial Boulevard near First Beach
This is a 4 lane road with a 25 mph speed limit. The places the cops hide is nearly an art at this stretch of road. They hide in the beach parking lots at night near the bottom, and where Memorial Boulevard starts to climb noticeably, the cops hide in the turning area in the middle of the road (This is a divided road with turning areas throughout), and they look down the hill. Also, I’ve seen them hiding behind a fenced in area (I believe enclosing some water utilities) right before the hill begins.
