Smile, speeders: SC town using I-95 speed cameras

RIDGELAND, S.C. — Motorists zipping along a stretch of Interstate 95 South Carolina may soon find themselves on camera.

The Beaufort Gazette reported Sunday that officials in Ridgeland have inked a five-year deal to set up automated speed cameras in the town. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says it will be the of its kind in South Carolina.

Radar will record a vehicle’s speed, and a camera will snap a photograph of a license plate and driver’s face. Tickets will be mailed, and drivers will be able to view footage online.

US Highway 27 near Railroad Crossing

On Hwy 27, through town of Ridgeville, before the RR tracks, where 55 mph changes to 35 mph. Too drastic a drop in speed limit to slow down adequately before they stop you.

Tickets are the main source of income for this town; it has been this way for over 30 years. Tickets are given for speeding constantly. The newest twist is the one for not stopping at a stop sign, even though you have stopped. You must remained stopped for 3 seconds or more. If you stop fully for less than that time period, you will get a minimum ticket for $232.00. Now, we are talking about a town that has very little traffic; most people avoid it if they can. At one point they installed a camera of Hwy. 27 and School House Road and mailed people tickets who had clearly stopped. The officer who stopped me harassed me and clearly tried to make me angry. When he finished with the ticket, he explained to me what was on the ticket. He asked me three times if I had any questions. All three times I responded with "No, could I please have my stuff back?" Even on the third try to get my paperwork back, he hesitated, not wanting to give it to me. At that point, I was angry and my blood sugar had previoulsy dropped just before I had left the general store, so I was eating to bring up the sugar level. Needless to say, it dropped even lower after the ticketing situation. When I got my paper work back, I told him that he was a liar and that he needed to arrest people who needed to be arrested for real crimes. There are more than enough drug dealers in the area to keep him busy 24 hours a day. I guess he is scared of them. He would rather harass a 52 year old English teacher who has never had a ticket in her life.
