State Highway 36 near State Highway Navasota   Bellville, Texas

From traffic light (intersection road going to Navasota) south along TX36 through Bellville southward beyond a concrete fabrication site along the BNSF railway. Speed limits are exceptionally low and excessively enforced along this stretch of highway by local police, deputy sheriffs, and occasional DPS patrolmen.

State Highway 36 near State Highway 159 East   Bellville, Texas

Driving North on Hwy 36 through Bellville the speed limit drops from 45 to 30 mph as you approach the intersection of Hwy 36 and Hwy 159 East. Bellville PD routinely parks on the side of the road just past the speed limit sign. They will ticket if you are more than 6-7 miles an hour over the 30 mph limit. The 30 mph speed limit is reasonable for that area of town, but the 15 mph drop can catch one off guard.

State Highway 36 near State Highway 159   Bellville, Texas

Rolling municipal police cruisers, speed limits change every 500 feet from the intersection of Hwy 159 and Hwy 36, police actually patrol on other side of railroad tracks on a street parralel to Hwy 36, clocking vehicles and radio ahead to other squad cars.
Texas has a defensive driving course to negate your first speed offense, this town charges a $95 fee take it, the fines start at $85, most travelers and out of towners just send in the fine.

State Highway 36 near Cross Street   Bellville, Texas

Officer is parked in the dark cross street in a 35 mph zone 186 feet away from a change to 45 mph zone. It is impossible to know a police car is nearby. The officer waits to catch people exceeding the limit from either direction in that short distance.

It's one of the "great" American past times: complaining about unfair speeding tickets. There are two types of people when it comes to complaining about this particular type of traffic ticket. Which group are you in?
