Big Country Convenience Store 4-Way Stop at CR 32 and CR 87

Elberta, AlabamaMay 16, 20180 Comments

There is a 4-way stop located near the town of Elberta, AL at the intersection of County Road (CR) 87 and County Road (CR) 32. There is a convenience store called ‘Big Country’ located at this intersection.

9 out of 10 times I travel through this stop I see one or more marked gold/brown Baldwin County Sheriff SUVs and/or patrol cars parked here.

I have also seen marked town of Elberta police cars here even though this location is far out of their posted town jurisdiction.

This intersection is monitored for stop sign violations and speeding routinely and is a preferred location for DUI roadblocks late at night on Fridays and Saturdays.

Out of State tourists seeking access to the Baldwin Beach Express wander upon this location not knowing where they are and law enforcement takes advantage of this.

Bonus Tip: Drivers should be aware there is much farm traffic in this area. Slow moving tractors and other moving farm equipment constantly block lanes traveling from one cotton field to another creating multiple safety hazards.

Cows also appear frequently in the roads having escaping fenced pastures! It’s not just the cops you have to watch out for in this part of Lower Alabama (LA).

CR 87 North and South Outside Elberta Police Jurisdiction

Baldwin County, AL County Road (CR) 87 North and South of Hwy 98 outside the ‘Elberta Police Jurisdiction’ posted sign is a blatant speedtrap used constantly by the little Town of Elberta, AL Police.

Marked and unmarked cars (they have a white marked Dodge Charger with roof lights and a dark gray slicktop ‘stealth’ lightly marked Dodge Charger among their many patrol car fleet – believe it or not they also have a black Humvee military assault SUV housed under a shed at their parking lot for all those hostage situations in Elberta) cruise slowly up and down Baldwin County Road 87 which is located just east of the Town of Elberta limits and intersects with Highway 98.

There is an ‘Elberta Police Jurisdiction’ sign posted about 1 mile north of Hwy 98 on CR 87 facing the southbound lane but Elberta Police routinely go far outside this posted sign pulling people over for as little as 1 mile over the posted 55 mph speed limit. I have even seen them north of Baldwin County Road 32 past the ‘Big Country’ convenience store 4-way stop.

This is a blatant and unlawful shakedown from the tiny Town of Elberta targeting tourists from all over, neighboring Floridians and anyone that is unfamiliar with the politics and made up Town ‘limits’. Elberta Councilmen and the Mayor all know that 99% of those ticketed will simply pay it and not fight it.

The State of Alabama needs to intervene in this out of control ‘Town’ (it’s not even a City). And NO, I have never received a ticket from them. I just want all that have to travel through the one red light town of Elberta to be aware of what is going on.

It’s not just the Town of Elberta working CR 87 either. Baldwin County Sheriffs patrol this stretch in marked gold/brown SUVs and marked gold/brown cars too although they aren’t as ruthless as Elberta is.

98 W driving out of Elberta, AL.

The city speed limit is 35MPH. The speed limit then changes to 55 MPH. There is no gradually or 45 MPH sign which is probably what throws many that drive by off. The only sign in between is the County RD 98, same color, almost same shape, therefore, would be confused at a glance to the 45 MPH sign. The City of Elberta police sit near hear to monitor and they know they will catch people heading out of time that do pay attention to this very easily misread sign. This is what I would call a speed trap.

Hwy 22 near Wolf Bay after crossing bridge go up hill hi

Elberta, AlabamaJun 06, 20121 Comments

My husband was driving the speed limit (one sign says 35 and the next sign says 45) while driving on 22. We had just crossed the bridge over Wolf Bay and went around the curve in the road. We were heading toward Lillian. As we went up the hill he was driving about 40 miles and hour. My husband is a conservative driver. As we topped the hill on the right side of the road a Elberta City Police was sitting there. We thought we were in the clear, but low and behold, a local cop put on his siren and stopped us. Now mind you he was not in the city limits of Elberta. He was just over the line about 200 yards or so. He said my husband was driving 51 in a 35 MPH zone. Which he wasn’t. We did not argue with the younger police officer. We accepted the ticket. Know we would probably go to court with it. Then a few days later, my husband mentioned it to a friend, who had rec’d a ticket in the same area. The officer again was outside of his city limits sign. The officer also told my husband’s friend he was driving 51 in a 35 mile MPH zone. Something is going on in time of Elberta. I know they need money but this isn’t the way to get it. On the main road Hwy 98 that goes through Elberta, within the city limits of the town, there is always someone speeding and they usually speed around my husband.
This area is in a tourist area going to Pensacola, and near Gulf Shores, AL. The Mayor in this town should think twice about sending his policemen out to write tickets. Mad people who feel that have been taken advantage of don’t stop in a town that has a speed trap to make purchases. Shame on Alberta. I will never shop in that town again. I am very disappointed in the way the police department works in this town. I am sure there are many more out there who have had similar experience in Alberta, AL

Officer writes ticket within two or three minutes after flashing lights goes off. Plays mind games with you and if you go to court the judge will give him the “benefit of the doubt.” My ticket read 50 in a 25mph zone. The light was off. Officer didn’t know actual time light went off but said he thought it was somewhere between 3:20 and 3:30pm. My ticket was for 3:19. Alabama Public Safety Dept. states flashers at the Elberta School are on from 7:30am-8:15am and 2:30-3:15pm. The ticket cost me $20 plus $130 court costs.
