I was heading back to St. Louis, passing through Mount Enterprise in a rented vehicle with Missouri plates. I was in the right lane and adhered to all speed limit signs. I had slowed from 70 to 55 to 50 to 45 and had my cruise control set to ensure I didn’t go over the speed limit. As I approached the only stop light in town I was followed and pulled over in the gas station parking lot and given a ticket saying I was speeding. I told the officer he was incorrect and I knew for a fact I wasn’t speeding. He told me that I could go to the judge and explain it. I told him I wouldn’t be in town and he said it was a personal problem. I called the courthouse before I left only to find out the court was not in, no one was there and this was a Wednesday at 10:30am. Apparently the courthouse was closed for the week? What court does this? When I got home I called Traffic Law Center to see if they would handle this. They told me they do not deal with Mount Enterprise because “the Mount Enterprise court doesn’t necessarily break the law, but doesn’t operate on an ethical level”. I tried to call them literally over 100 times over the next month to try and handle this but not one time did anyone answer the phone. Then I got a bill from them saying that my ticket wasn’t handled in time and was increased from $165 to $881.56. I couldn’t believe this. Then I got a letter from the state of Missouri saying Mount Enterprise had sent a letter to them to suspend my drivers license until it was paid. This is an exact example of a system designed to protect citizens but instead is being twisted to increase the linings of the judge and police in the town. I don’t understand how the state of Texas has yet to step in and stop this from besmirching the reputation of its state.

4-way stop Mt.Enterprise Texas

I was driving South through Mt. E and entered the left turn lane at the 4-way stop to make a left turn. I made the turn and was immediately stopped by City Cop who said I crossed a physical barrier while making the turn. The last few feet of the lane – just before the stop sign has yellow stripes painted across it. My question is – if you can’t turn left from the left turn lane where can you turn from? There was no warning ticket for this serious infraction – just a $112 ticket!

I was passing through Mount Enterprise going 55 mph. I saw the sign ahead of me that said the speed limit was 70. There was a policeman parked on the median to the left. As i sped up to the posted speed limit the policeman turned on his lights and pulled me over for speeding. I was given the ticket and a paper with the list of fines for all offenses. Mine was 160 dollars. Since the judge is there only on Monday i called the county clerk to arrange either deferred adjudication or defensive driving. She said that they no longer offer deferred adjudication and i could not take defensive driving. What a ripoff.

I was traveling north through Mt. Enterprise. I was in a vehicle with out of state plates, ‘stuff’ in the back, luggage ect. and looked like the perfect patsy, someone who would just pay up rather than fight. It was April 28, 2010. However, I have a GPS which gives me the speed limits whereever I am and alerts me if I’m going too fast. I obey the speed laws to the letter. I have only had one ticket in 39 years of driving experience and one fender bender accident. This officer fell in behind me and followed me to the four way stop, the only one in town. This stop has both a flashing red light and a stop sign. When I pulled up to the intersection, there was a semi in front of me. The officer, David Collins turned on his lights while I was at the intersection, sandwitched between him and the semi truck. When I saw the lights, I proceeded through the intersection and pulled over into a gas station parking lot. He then proceeded to tell me that I had ran the ‘red light’ and wrote me a ticket, the fine of which was $165. He already had the ticket filled out and was gone in less than five minutes.
This little city is the second most lucrative traffic trap in the State of Texas. If I had been speeding, I would pay the fine and move on, but I did nothing wrong. He turned his lights on me before the ‘offense’ occurred. This is one dishonest operation. If you don’t speed through their town, they will pull you over anyway and give you a ticket for running their only red light/four way stop. I’m a 57 year old grandma….only one ticket in my entire life, only one minor accident 20 years ago.

This cop is the only one in town. He will sit facing north (toward henderson). He sits at an old station with his radar on. He will get you when the speed limit changes from 70 to 55 then to 50 and then to 45. He does not worry about insurance just your DL. He does like to sit at the 4-way stop signs at the only red light in town. He does not give warnings! Make sure that you obey the laws in this town.
