State Highway 21 near State Highway 21

Mustang Ridge, TexasSep 04, 20080 Comments

This is a speed trap in what appears to be an undeveloped area. There is nothing on this highway but city limit signs. It is suspected that the city limit markers are wrong on purpose to include an area much larger than the city. The town has 785 people and they have three police cars. The town was incorporated in 1985 by two brothers who also serve as mayor, judge, and magistrate. Be careful. They write for the smallest violations. If you fight the ticket however, you may win. It’s been done before.

Mustang Ridge,Tx is about one mile away from state hwy 21, but the town has incorporated about 5 to 7 miles of the state highway and made the speed limit 55mph as opposed to the 70mph allowed on each end of the town limits. There is absolutely nothing on this road to watch for except the city policeman is usually out on the highway. No part of the town is along the highway.

approx. 20 miles south of Austin, Texas on US Highway 183

There is no town there, simply a stretch of highway that has been incorporated. Heavily partolled by up to three cars. Zero tolerance. Will write for anything above the posted limits.
City limit signs are hidden, so you do not know when you have entered their enforcement zones.

US HWY 183 from Fm 973 to ST HWY 21/ HWY 21 1.5 miles either side of US 183

Mustang Ridge consists of approximately 6 miles of US HWY 183 and 3 miles of ST. HWY. 21.(Just south of Austin) The speed limit is posted at 65. This community survives on revenue generated from tickets. Local media has done several stories on them. Enforcement is mostly during daylight hours and heavy on weekends. The court is run fairly and the judge is an honest man. The officers however stretch the law where they can. On Hwy21 the current city limit sign is not posted, there are however two old signs posted between US 183 and the Bastrop County line. Niether of these is the correct city limit sign. The officers do however,on a regular basis, write tickets in this area hoping no one will contest the ticket. Be careful on 21 and stay near the speed limit on 183. If ticketed take it to court you have a good chance of beating it!

It’s not so much the fact of it being a trap. But the fact that the Officers are writing tickets knowingly outside of their city limits. The city limit signs posted are not correct. The limits are actually before the posted signs now, and the Officers and the Judge know this. It is not a case of clocking them inside the limits and getting them stopped outside. They are clocking them outside the actual city limits. Therefore, any one who has/does get a ticket from them, is due a full refund by state law. Not to mention this is illegal as the Judge knows it, and it continues.
