158 and I10 in Ozona

Ozona, TexasApr 10, 20130 Comments

Was headed to South Texas from Odessa, Tx. Coming down 158 toward 10, a deputy saw I had no front license plate, and doubled back around me. As we got onto 10 he hit the reds and blues. I was not speeding, was wearing a seatbelt, nothing to warrant a stop. After pulling us over, he started inquiring to the nature of our business, we explained that we were in the oil industry headed to a rig. He became agitated when he found out that we were from West Texas but had Louisiana plates. He explained that our license plate light was out. After the stop, I got out to check and saw it was on, looked at the deputy and he just shrugged and drove off.

1975, yes, I’m late in detailing this to you. Just discoved this site. Driving from Hawaii to Mexico, ok, California to Mexico in my ’67 VW bug with bright yellow license plates, two surf boards on top. Pull’d over by Johnny Law. The three of us are told we can hire a defense attorney (doesn’t appear that there’s one in town just now, so would have to wait in jail for one to return) and can expect to fork over 2 grand or more to hire his services OR plead guilty to the "contraban substance" we are accused of having. (we did, btw) A guilty plea will be a small fine of say…. oh, about $1500 , ya, that’s the ticket, $1500. two of us pay and I have to wait to have my money wired to me. Newest deputy recently hired and just out of the Air Force from Hickam Air Base says there’s more pot in Ozona being smuggled than any other city/county in Texas. AND, more millionaires than anywhere else in the state. Ya, the judges and lawyers are all on the take, as in taking any out of state young people’s money. Heck, they’re guilty of something aren’t they???? Deputy says it’s always $1500, they just want the money, $1500. Non-Texas plates $1500. Bright yellow plates, oh, ya, $1500. They busted a young 23 year old lady while I was there, was in the Coast Guard I remember, told her to pay up or spend her time in with the guys as there wasn’t a female jail. Scared the living crap out of her!!! bas#**ds!!! I spent 7 days there waiting for my $$$$. Ozona can fall off the face of the earth for all I care. I bet it’s still on the take. Avoid this place!!!!

I-10 between the two main exits

Driving from California to Florida I was stopped for going 78. The officer handed me a "menu" of possible fines and directed me to the local judges office so I could pay the fine "cash or money order only"! It took every penny I had. I was told "do no try to drive through, my fellow officer on the other side Will stop you." Thank goodness I managed to get hold of a family member to wire me enough to make it to an aunts house in Houston. I now call Ozona-"ONO" Texas. They should be ashamed stranding a younger woman in a strange location without funds. By the way, they were in the same location two weeks later on my return trip.

Look out!! Texas DPS Highway Patrol heavily patrols this stretch of highway. Especially one Chevy SUV and a standard Crown Victoria car. Don’t be fooled by the generous speed of 80 as they are known to catch you on coming over a hill and turn their cruiser around to pursue you. Anything over 82 will constitute a traffic stop and most likely a full vehicle search too. I got nailed here for doing 87 when driving to California from Florida. No joke: when I handed the officer my Florida driver’s license, I was asked to step out of the vehicle and got searched. Make no mistake, these officers do profile out of state drivers! Save yourself the roadside embarrassment of being searched and don’t speed here.

Your driving bored accross the huge state of Texas on the 10. It’s just you and the road. Between exits 163 & 168, you’ll have DPS company. Never mind there’s NO danger. They just want your money. Slow down in this area and make them work themselves out of business.
