I-85 Northbound, 30 mm, exit 28

Alberta, VirginiaDec 21, 20100 Comments

Officer ticketed me with reckless driving for 83 in a 70. The Alberta police have apparently set up shop along with the other local communities (south hill, etc) to have I-85 patrolled constantly with 3-4 separate speed traps in and around south hill.

When I contacted lawyers in the area, they all said the same thing. The courts are flooded with these cases. You need to hire a lawyer and they can get it reduced (still will cost you $200 plus attorney fees). One even admitted they contact the officer and negotiate a deal. Negotiate a deal? I wonder if that is over a steak dinner.

That entire area is a speed trap and exists for no other reason than to levy taxes. The court system is rigged because the same circumstances and defense will fail without a lawyer representing you. They will get huge taxes on those dumb enough to self represent, and still get decent money for those who hire an attorney. The attorneys and possibly the officers are also getting a piece of the pie.

Either way, a win-win for them. Avoid this area all together if possible and if not, do not speed.

I85 14 mile marker

It seems the tiny little town of Alberta has followed suit with South Hill and LaCrosse and their ticket writing gold rush. "Alberta Patrol" will be found lurking around the 14 mile marker. I make two weekly trips and have seen him about 50% of the time. late Sunday night seems to be a favorite, but it’s probably wise to be watchful any time of day between 13 and 16 markers.
So far, I’ve only seem him working Southbound.
