State Highway 50 near Ashby Gap and Route 17

Paris, VirginiaJun 29, 20080 Comments

The trapping officer waits for motorists which have just crossed Ashby Gap, and begin coming down a very steep hill, while simultaneously the speed limit is dropped from 55 to 45. There is only one speed limit sign for the change, and its posted in the opposite direction of the turn in the gap, where most motorists do not instinctively look. Without riding the brakes, a vehicle will naturally coast down the hill at about 55. The officer waits at a blind spot in the turn just prior to the light-intersection of routes 50 and 17. Combination of Virginia State Troopers and a Fauquier County Sheriff SUV trap this location.

Eastbound, as you pass Route 601 (Blue Ridge Mountain Road) there is a small rise. As you come over the top, you’re busted.
