Williams, California Speed Traps

CHP officer parked in center median using viaduct guardrails so to obscure his cruiser from n/b traffic’s view… stands outside cruiser and uses laser on n/b traffic… late afternoon on a Sunday.

CHP office in Williams. Well known area for heavy patrol and tough enforcement. Has been this way for 30+ years as far as I know and well known to people traveling from bay area to Redding. Slow down when approaching Willams and after for several miles.

The words perfectly straight do not even begin to describe this road. It is perfectly straight, and just slightly declined, which makes it worse, with nothing but fields for miles on either side. It was late night, and there was no traffic on this road for 3 miles in front of me and 3 miles behind, not oncoming and not in my lane. 1/2 mile from the I-5 and I saw the whirling red and blue lights… he clocked me at 78 mph, but wrote me the ticket for 65. Nice of him, to be sure, but it begs the question of whether 55 mph is really a legitimate speed limit for a perfectly straight, slightly declined road when there are no cars for miles in front and miles behind. 20 E right before the junction with I-5… don’t get carried away even if you are all alone in the world with blue sky above and the horizon all around… there could be a cop in the cornfield just waiting.

This area is used for training CHP recruits due to its proximity to the acadamy in Sacramento. Regular enforcement at all times and thick as flies at others.
