Becoming a known speed trap. Definitely an effort to raise revenue, primarily from out of town visitors and also those who own property and pay taxes to the city and Camden county. Speed limit used to be 50 MPH through Sunrise Beach but has been lowered to 45MPH. This is in light of significant shoulder improvements and road improvements in the area. Doesn’t make much sense. Difficult to keep speed down since steep hills abound in the area. Law enforcement often patrols in SUV’s and is adept at blending in with civilian vehicles in parking lots. What makes this speed trap even more effective is that villages before and after it usually demonstrate sensible traffic law enforcement, giving the driver a false sense of fairness.

The speed limit alternates several times between 40 and 50 mph for no apparent reason other than to cause motorists to inadvertently exceed the speed limit. Sunrise Beach is not taking a lesson from the neighboring town up the road — Gravois Mills. That town became notorious for issuing tickets to raise revenue. Travelers then avoided the town causing the service stations, restaurants and C-stores to go out of business.

Sunrise Beach male police officers will generally let female motorists off with a warning. However, males are ticketed for going as little as 1 to 3 miles per hour over the speed limit. Sunrise Beach is in the Lake of the Ozarks resort area and the ticketing is an effort to raise revenue from out-of-town visitors.

The speed limit changes several times through the city from 40 to 55 mph. You must watch your downhill speed and the many changes.
