Zavala Sheriff’s patrolling this area are notorious for stopping vehicles, issuing citations with no warnings. This is an area with frequent travelers since it is the main route from Eagle Pass to San Antonio. The speed limits drop from 70 to 55 (right in front of the a co-op plant) and then again to 35 (past the cemetery) traveling from Eagle Pass. There are usually two or three sheriff patrols in this 1-2 mile stretch and turn on radars as traffic approaches. In the past two years, I have been given two citations, one for speeding soon after passing an 18 wheeler in a passing zone (sheriff clocked me at 76 in 70 mph zone; 18 wheeler was about 30 yards behind me. I explained he didn’t listen and he said he didn’t see any 18 wheeler) and the worst stop of all was when i was clocked at 38 in this 35 mph zone. No warning; I was give a citation. I had to call the judge because the worn down and blurry pamphlet I was given only had fees for speed limits over 6 mph and more. I would have had to pay 6 mph or more fee of 140 dollars. I took a defensive driving course; two months after I requested it. It is difficult to locate the judge in this small town.
In a separate encounter, my girlfriend was stopped for “crossing the median”. Luckily she was given a warning; she was under the speed limit. I guess that helped.
