Since October of 2010, if you drive outbound South Dakota Ave (4900 block) in Michigan Park, you will see a McDonalds on your right hand side. In the lot next to the McDonald’s lot, there sits a DC Police Car during the morning and early afternoon. The cop in that car aims his speed gun at everything that goes by and pulls them over. One day, I sat across from him in a gas station for an hour and watched him pull over numerous cars. I am a professor at the new community college down the avenue from his post. My students have complained of getting tickets from this officer. One student received a $125 ticket for going JUST 13 mile per hour over the speed limit. On the other end of the spectrum, my assistant received a WHOPPING $250 ticket for going 28 miles per hour over the speed limit from this same officer. My assistant also told me that the officer said to her that if she was going a couple of extra miles per hour faster, she would have been arrested. I think that is a total violation of anyone’s right to arrest them for speeding. Of course I forewarn my students, fellow faculty and friend to slow down when going through this area. I am almost positive he can hand out 30+ speeding tickets a day.
