IL 72 at Sleepy Hollow Rd

Sleepy Hollow, IllinoisJul 30, 20110 Comments

IL-72 Eastbound from Randall Rd there is a 45 mph speed limit sign just west of Sleepy Hollow Rd. Somehow this sign seems to always be just behind overhanging tree limbs. The Sleepy Hollow police sit in the parking lot of the Highway Dept building where IL-72 curves coming into West Dundee.

Sleepy Hollow Road, just north of Elgin

Road takes a 90-degree right turn, with dense woods on the right side blocking vision past the curve. The road is posted at 45 MPH in Elgin, but drops to 30 as you enter Sleepy Hollow, and as soon as your front wheels pass the speed limit sign, you get pulled over.

The only time I would suggest driving on this 24/7 speedtrap is from 5-6 in the morning – when the midnight shift cop is 2 towns away eating breakfast. Any other time, carry some bond money, as writing tickets is this department’s sole source of revenue. Would even give Mayberry a bad name.

Locust Avenue near State Route 72

Police often park in big lot at SW corner of Locust and 72 and trap speeders going either direction. The limit is 25 and the road is hilly so you often need to brake to keep within the limit. I am told that tickets are the only source of revenue for the village. There is little other crime so the ploice are quite diligent about enforcing the limit. I have never been ticketed but know of people who have been for less that 5 over the 25 mph limit.

Sleepy Hollow Road

Rural road running North and South connecting McLean Blvd. in Elgin and IL rt. 72 in West Dundee. A stretch of this road passes through the Village of Sleepy Hollow and has a posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour. However, in areas where the road is running through other townships, the speed limit is 35 miles per hour. It is heavily enforced at all times of day, especially around a mile south of rt. 72 where the road runs by a large stable called "The Headless Horseman." Be careful here. If the cliche doesn’t get you, the police certainly will.
