US-171 a few miles before Lake Charles

Driving from DeRidder to Lake Charles is a pretty boring stretch of road where speed limit is 45, but you have a 9 out of 10 chance of not getting a ticket for going up to 65-70.
However, as soon as you re-enter civilization in the small town of Gillis, right after the stoplight the speed limit is (if I remember correctly) 65, so you can usually go up to 70. Traffic moves pretty freely there.
Keep going and you enter Moss Bluff: a larger town, where the speed limit drops to 45 right before you get to a stoplight/very popular road with a Wendy’s on the corner. Police are always in that area, sometimes well-hidden, and if they are traveling in the opposite direction from you, they have been known to make U-turns to speed after your speeding bum. I have learned that when you see a cop and ever-so-subtley try to slow down, it is usually too late because he KNOWS you were speeding and gets you anyway.
When I was pulled over, I was doing 77 in the 45, not even realizing there was a speed limit change (there was virtually NO traffic that morning). There I was, just turned 18, from out of town, and when asked for license/registration, realized I had accidentally left my license at home in the jacket I had worn the day before. He graciously let me go, but not all people are that fortunate. When traveling through Moss Bluff, I always make sure to go between 40 and 45, no matter how many people pass me because they "think" I am going "too slow." WATCH OUT! 🙂
