Cumberland, Maryland Speed Traps

This speed trap is located just outside Cumberland city jurisdiction and is patrolled by the Maryland State Police. State police regularly park in the parking lot of a store called the fruit bowl on National Hwy Sw. This is a two way road that runs between two mountains, an area locals call "the narrows." the road runs along the C&O path, Potomac River, and the rail road tracks, and connects Cumberland to other areas such as Lavale and Mount Savage.

This is a 3 mile stretch of highway that is regularly patrolled. It’s a "rolling" speed trap. MD State Police drive back & forth the entire stretch. The speed limit is 55 but the road encourages more speed with long straights and passing zones. Warnings are very rare.

This one is halfway down the west side of Martins Mountain, as you’re approaching Exit 50-Rocky Gap. They sit in the middle and can shoot radar in either direction. There are sometimes 3 or 4 police cars there at one time, and sometimes they also sit under the overpass to exit 50-Rocky Gap. I travel through this area twice a day, first around 2pm and again around 5pm, and police are at this location more often than not.

Traps are usually on the westbound downhill lanes around Rocky Gap. Cops wait at or near the bottom of the hill and give you a ticket.
