Old County Road near State Route 17

Rockland, MaineJan 14, 20080 Comments

The highly-travelled Route 1 is undergoing renovation – therefore the only other viable route between Rockland and Thomaston is via Old County Road. Rush hours are heavily monitored. Men driving trucks are rarely stopped – women in cars and the ‘caboose’ driver in a line of traffic are the preferred easy targets. This street has a speed limit of 35 – most roads that are comparable to Old County Road have speed limits around 40-45 – and some even at 50. First timers on the road are often ticketed instead of warned. (Inside source said that speeding ticket revenue has Doubled since traffic was diverted to this road.)

Old County Road

Old County Road is a road off rte. 1 into Rockland. Its starts right by PenBay Medical Center going south and ends somewhere south of Rockland on rte 1 again. As you go along the road the speed limit is 40 until you come down a hill and curve slightly to the right, where a sign of 25 appears from behind foliage. You have about 100 feet to react(This is a guess. It could be less). (There are no warning signs like "reduced speed zone ahead"). The cop will be sitting in an abandoned drive to the left when coming south. He is right there and there is no time to react. This trap is just North of the Municipal Golf Course. I received a $123 ticket for going "41 in a 25 mph zone". Incedentally, after you have passed the 25 mph sigh going south and the cop pullover, you will see in the opposite direction a sign for 40 mph. So which is it?
