Houghton Lake, Michigan Speed Traps
M55 entering Roscommon county from the west
On M55 just across the line from Missaukee county into Roscommon county, cop backs into a two track a couple hundred feet into the county. Also entering Houghton lake from the west on M55 the speed limit drops to 45 and the cop is right near the sign. If they are not on a run, they are usually there.

Tower Hill Road near W. Nestel Road
There is often an officer parked near the Sportsman’s club. They watch for people coming over the hill from the North doing over 40, and cars coming from the South that don’t slow down from 55 to 40 quickly enough. Both County and State police use this area.
State Highway M-55 near Interstate I-75
When coming to Houghton Lake using I-75, exit 227, you merge onto M-55. Because there is no stop before merging, most leave cruise on coming into Houghton Lake. The speed limit on M-55 on that particluar stretch is 55 MPH. The sign is often missed and that stretch of road is for the most part wilderness. State, County, and Township patrol this area regularly, and do enforce.
State Highway M-18 near between 35 & 45 MPH sign going south
A police car sits right across from the 35 MPH sign. There is a 35MPH zone for just a short time. It goes from 40 MPH (in town) until the light on M55 and M18 then the speed changes to 35 MPH for just a short way and then goes to 45 MPH to city limits. My wife recently got a ticket at the 55 MPH sign…coming from 45 MPH.
