Woodward Avenue near Interstate 696

Pleasant Ridge, MichiganMay 25, 20070 Comments

City of Pleasant Ridge police position themselves in the Woodward Avenue underpass that goes under the freeway. The road is constructed like an expressway but the speed limit is 45mph. This underpass is very deep and the officer places the cruiser so that he is hidden behind the expressway bridge. You don’t see him until it is too late.

Woodward Avenue, just South of I-696. Officers typically wait on second side street South of I-696 (West side) or in Penzoil Oil Change parking lot a few blocks further South.

Woodward Ave. (M-1) under the I-696 overpass

Woodward is 45 MPH at this point, but cars typically accelerate to 60+ because the street dips under the 696 overpass dramatically. Both Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge patrols lurk at the very bottom, concealed in perfect shadow, invisible from the eye until it’s too late. One officer referred to it as "a shooting gallery;" another, "probably the biggest moneymaker we have so far."
