Highway 79 – from St. Paul to Elsberry

Winfield, MissouriFeb 04, 20130 Comments

This stretch of highway, in it’s entirety, is one long speed trap. Especially Winfield and Foley. Speed limits vary wildly, and change with very little notice, warning, or distance to decelerate. The towns along this highway use it strictly for revenue generation.
My wife was recently pulled over for doing 61 in a 60 (seriously). Take an alternate route if possible – it will be cheaper than losing a day in court to beat the bogus ticket.

There is a State Hwy Trooper in a silver full size pickup that sits at the gas station and used car lot when you are going north into Winfield as you are comming into a 45 mph zone down from a 60mph.

Also the same pickup will be between Winfield and Foley along with other local police along side the road at nightime with there lights off sitting on the shoulder of the road trapping people.

These 2 towns are very active in pulling people over, whatch it! It is only 30 mph through Winfield and Foley.

There is only one stop sign in Winfield. It is a 3-way stop in town in front of pizza plus and at the other 2 roadways. When you stop at one of the stop signs, you better come to a complete stop and count to 3 or 4 or you"ll get a ticket for going through a stop sign.

State Highway 79 near Nothing in particular; that’s what’s tricky about it

Winfield, MissouriMar 31, 20060 Comments

When going south on Highway 79 (from Hannibal or other more northern town) into Winfield, be very careful. The speed limit signs are not at all obvious. You will be going on a curvy road and suddenly notice in the distance that there is a stop sign. A Winfield policeman will be there just waiting to ticket you going 55 mph in an approx 35 mph zone that comes up all of the sudden.

Beware of all of Hwy 79. Even locals get ticketed a few times every year since there are traps everywhere. It’s a shame since Hwy 79 is promoted by the MO Dept. of Tourism as a "Scenic Hwy" since it is along the Mississippi river. In fact, people take a longer route (hwy 61) simply to avoid 79 since it has many traps.

If you arent at 45 or below the speed when you hit the sign a cop will pull you over for one mile over and issue a ticket. And when you have to fight it in court they dont have one. You just have to pay the fine and cant fight it in court.
