Manteo, North Carolina Speed Traps
Us 64 near mill tail rd
The speed is only 55 here. The main thing I wanted to point out is they require you attend in person and pay all court costs and hire an expensive attorney if you cannot attend. In other words, this trap is supporting the local economy…you are looking at spending $500 or more if you are from out of town.
US Highway 64 near State Highway 345
Local county sheriff hides on side of road late after dark using radar to record speed of cars entering into the township of Manteo. There is practically no traffic – easy to catch non-locals going over the speed limit given their unfamilarity with the area’s traffic laws.
Whole Town
Manteo is a weird town. It’s not exactly sleepy, but it’s not quite a hub of excitement, either. One thing’s for sure, the town cops there like to keep busy messing with people. A tactic they like to use is to follow you through town with their headlights off, wait til you get to the south causeway that goes to Nags Head, and light you up as soon as you start to speed up. Once you stop, you’re accused of speeding and DUI, and they’ll give you an FST as well as portable breath test, and two Dare County goons will also show up suddenly to search your car. This happened to me THREE TIMES in just over a WEEK, twice with the SAME COP! When I inquired just what the hell this guy’s problem was with me, he threatened to throw me in jail for obstruction! When in Manteo at night, just try not to attract too much attention to yourself. Might save you some money AND hassle.
