On Commerce Avenue, a police cruiser hides in the entrance ramp to the Hannah Caldwell School. You will not see him, because of the hill that surrounds it. He is using a radar gun and gets you just as soon as you hit the highest point in the street, so you gain a lot of momentum coming down.

The officer is specifically there for that reason. It is in a school zone but he pulled me over on a Saturday at 9 a.m. He is only there because these are point tickets and will make very much money for the town.

I really loved the Union Police Force, but the past few years I’m finding many of the new officers to be quite rude in general and dangerous when in pursuit. Ask any Union resident and they will tell you that. It is a total abuse of privileged.

They have pulled over several people near my mom’s street very late at night, all the while speaking loudly and flashing their lights the entire time. 4 or more cruisers with two cops on each, sitting there for well over an hour. Woke me up. I felt it was completely unnecessary.

I have heard that they picked several cops from the Newark police force (when they were cut). This could be part of the issue.

Additionally, I had someone vandalize my then vacant new home, throwing a rock through my window. I filed a report and shared my concerns with the police. I asked them to place me on the patrol list. Not once did I see a patrol car come by why house.

Instead they only sit at speed traps, their concern is no longer to make us safe but to make the town money. I am so disappointed with this town. So disappointed.

Sorry for my long rant but I just thought everyone should know how unethical SOME of these cops are. Many are very kind and wonderful people but so many of the new ones are tjust exactly as I’ve described, rude and careless.

Pls be careful out there, not only to be safe but also avoiding falling into these traps.

The police like to sit near the old Union Hospital parking lot and catch you as you leave 5 points. Sometimes sitting at the corner of Forest Drive or Huntington Road also.

On April 18th, 2010 at about 1:30 PM the Union Twp. Police had a white Ford Expedition doing traffic enforcement on southbound U.S. HWY 22 which is just at the beginning of about a 2 to 2½ mile long large center island median spanning Union Twp., Springfield Twp., a piece of Westfield and a portion of Mountainside which contains 9 seperate U-turns (some one way, some two way) and many businesses inside-part of which was “Adventure Car Hop” during the 1960’s C.E. . During the time of this detail as with many other times during this period of the day there was very heavy traffic. The time to really look out for is when traffic goes to the opposite extreme of no congestion at all being that this part of U.S. 22 is “semi-limited access” meaning that there are no traffic lights all the way untill you reach Mountainside if you’re travelling southbound. Make no mistake about it-the speed limit along most if not all of this stretch is only 45 MPH ! And, there are many places that the police departments of the above mentioned towns can hide along both sides of the island AND both sides of the roadway. This also may include “Union County Police” towards the south end near Echo Lake park. I will keep posting as to precise times and locations of such traps. Note not to be confused with exact duplicate or similar named communities in Hunterdon, Burlington, and even Hudson county as this is a very confusing and annoying aspect of New Jersey. Exact coordinates of the traffic detail were 40.691969, -74.286104
