Northway Intersection with Rt 20/Western Ave

Albany, New YorkDec 16, 20191 Comments

Heading south on I-87 after the exit for I-90 and the NYS Thruway, the highway continues straight towards Route 20/Western Ave and Crossgates Mall. There is a reduced speed zone that is clearly marked by signs; however, they still manage to catch many speeding drivers. The highway speed limit reduces from 55 MPH to 45 MPH just before the exit ramp for Crossgates Mall. One or two NYS Troopers will sit just after the underpass on a dirt embankment on the left. This trap is particularly active during holidays when the mall might be crowded and during weekend evenings/nights.

Also note: Troopers sometimes check the speeds of cars entering I-87 Northbound from Western Ave (Rt 20 Eastbound entrance). Be sure that when you round the curve on the ramp, you don’t speed up to quickly as the trooper is well hidden until it’s too late.

Route 157, John Boyd Thatcher Park, Albany County

Albany, New YorkJul 20, 20170 Comments

A rural road with very few entry/exit points. While it does warn you of a speed zone, it is straight down a hill. Before you “enter” Thatcher Park there is a sign that says “Speed Zone Ahead”. Take note of it! It’s an agonizing 30 MPH on a road that should be at least 40-45 MPH, and it is very easy to go over 30 MPH down a straight hill. You’ll be caught on radar before you can slow down.

New York State Thruway Between Exit 23 and 24

Albany, New YorkMay 13, 20120 Comments

There is a Seven mile Construction zone between exits and Troopers are waiting on both ends of it. Watch your speed from beginning to end. Fines are double in work zones and they will write you a ticket.

I-87 right before/after the Twin Bridges

Albany, New YorkApr 21, 20110 Comments

I work in Albany and have to drive this route every day at 1-2pm. for at least 5 out of the 7 days in a week, there is always a police car in the turnaround nailing people where the speed limit drops from 65 to 55mph. been driving this route for 2 years, and boy oh boy, they are consistent.
