101 north & south just south of Santa Rosa Rd.   Buellton, California

In both directions of the 101 just south of Santa Rosa Rd. the CHP has a couple of nice spots to tuck into and let the rear facing radar do the work. Lately the have even been giving out tickets for 72 so the old saying "anything under 75 is ok" is no longer valid.

On the northbound Ca. 101 north of the Gaviota tunnel betwee   Buellton, California

When you exit the tunnel northbound the highway then becomes a down grade which makes it very easy to go faster than you realize. There is an emergency turn around in the center divider. The CHP car sits at that divider on the southbound side facing northbound side with radar. After you pass him he U turns behind you and pulls you over within a short distance. There is a wide gravel shoulder on the right side.

State Highway 246 near Interstate 101   Buellton, California

As you head westbound toward Lompoc on Hwy 246 in Buellton the speed limit increases from 35 to 45 mph. Right before the sign posting the increase to 45mph is a side residential street where the sheriff's department hides to clock traffic speed. Even though there is a clear view of the sign and most drivers start to increase their speed when they see it so that you have reached the new speed limit as you pass the sign, they will cite you if you have not actually passed the sign yet. I was cited for doing 48 in a 35 zone literally five feet in front of the 45 mph sign. The good news is that the judge is well aware of this speed trap and if you contest the ticket you stand an excellent chance of having it dismissed as long as your speed is close to 45 mph and not way over.
