Alexandria’s police force and mayor’s court was shut down by state law in 2012. The law says a town must have a population of at least 200 to have a mayor’s court, and Alex is only about 160 people. The area is now patrolled by the Licking County sheriff and the Ohio Highway Patrol.

There is over 20 reserve officers who patrol this village. The officers drive a black Chevy Impala, which is very hard to spot. They can run radar from the front and rear of their cruiser. They point their radar down Granville Street and they pull multiple people over at the same time. They usually issue tickets 9 out of 10 traffic stops. The speed limit drops from 35 mph to 25 mph. It is only 25 mph for 200 feet, then it returns to 35 mph. If you have a headlight out, brake light out, or even a license plate light and you come through this small village, you will get a ticket…

The village speed limit is 35 MPH as you enter Alexandria and adequate warning is given of that. However there is a 350 foot zone of 25 MPH which is not well marked either side of the only traffic light.

Officers are posted daily near the traffic light or in a turn off by the covered bridge/park. The speed limit quickly drops from 55 to 35 to 25 to 20. I drive through twice a day and it is a rare occaision not to see someone pulled over. Locals know and go extra slow, but if you are from out of town and not familiar with the area, watch out.
