Highway 142
Highway 142 connects Bernardston and Northfield MA with the Vermont towns south of Brattleboro. The limit on the Vermont side of the line is a steady 50 and drops to 25 within 150 yards of the border after you cross into Mass. The speed limit continues to fluctuate randomly for the 5 miles it takes for 142 to connect with Massachusetts 10 at Bernardston. A quarry for a contruction company is about 3.5 miles south of the Vt/Ma line. The police wait here completely obstructed from view, sometimes without any lights at night. Tickets on the road start at $250 and go up from there. Officers are also known for asking to search vehicles- it isn’t really optional- either you consent or you are going to be very late for work. This is a major commuter route for employees of Lane construction, Cersosimo lumber and a route to I-91 for residents of southern VT towns. Leaf peepers also tend to take this ‘back road’. I can’t believe this town isn’t taking in at least 50% of its revenue from tickets. Well known area speed trap.
