Speed limit drops from 45 mph to 30 mph with legally insufficient notice. Charlotte County Sheriff's Office can usually be found here between 8 and 9 a.m., and during the mid-afternoon hours. Enforcement is most frequent during winter when out-of-state tourists are in abundance. Approaching from Englewood, look for deputies on your left. And this speed trap is not limited to the area of the beach club pedestrian crossing. You're not safe until you pass or turn onto the Boca Grande Causeway - and then you face a whole new adventure in speed traps.
Because defendants have successfully attacked the sufficiency of the signage and the legality of the speed limit, deputies tend to target non-local motorists who are, of course, the least likely to go to court. Locals tend to get warnings. (Hint: If you are not local, tell the deputy that you are vacationing or contemplating vacationing in the area for a few months. This will boost your odds of getting a warning as it increases the odds you will go to court).
