State Route 7 near University Boulevard
As motorists are traveling southbound on Ohio State Route 7 they are just entering the limits of the City of Steubenville. The speed limit drops from 50MPH to 35MPH within a few yards of the city limits. This is four lane highway with 7 seven traffic control devices. However, the road is well paved and fairly level; with good visibility up ahead. What the city has done is place a radar photo enforcement camera just a little past where the speed limit drops at University Boulevard. The device is place behind a slight curve with a sign (lately of varying sizes) to give notice of the device. This sign is about 7 feet from the device. The City of Steubenville has publicly stated that 3,500 tickets (at $85 each) have been issued. Even though the device is portable I would suspect the majority of these tickets are generated from this spot. The program started in Mid-September 2005. The population of Steubenville only about 18,000. So, motorists traveling into Steubenville via Ohio State Route Seven should use caution when doing so, both when going southbound and northbound.
