Esquimalt Road near Dunsmuir Road

Victoria, British ColumbiaOct 13, 20050 Comments

Near the 800 block of Esquimalt Rd. (close to Dunsmuir), Esquimalt Rd. curves slightly. The speed limit for this curve is 30kph (the limit for the bulk of Esquimalr Rd. is 50kph).

This is very deceptive speed trap because there are no schools, obstrutions ot hazards which would warrant the speed limit to be reduce to 30kph. The police like to postion themselves facing westbound traffic around the 850 block of Esquimalt Rd. (just past the Bingo parlor). It’s an easy pick-off for the police–by the time you’ve rounded the curve, there’s almost no chance of seeing a radar trap in time to slow down.

An obvious cash grab by the city.

Keating X Road

On Keating X Road, near Mt. Newton School. They hide behind the concrete barriers facing the Industrial Park, and on the other side of the school facing the valley.

McKenzie Ave, heading east toward UVic

Cop was hiding behind a hydro power box with his radar gun.. on the right of McKenzie Ave, 2 lites past the exit u would take to head north on the PatBay Hwy toward the ferries.. McKenzie is 4 lane there, basically highway as all of it is.. 50kms way too slow. I felt abused when this cop jumps out from behind the hydro box and into the middle of the road pointing me down. Does this serve and protect? Really? I have never harmed anyone from driving, and I’ve driven for 21 years, rarely at the rediculously low speed limits. I dont mind being safe, but I’m not stupid, I can drive and drive safely.

Corner of McKenzie and Quadra at Sannich Centre Shopping Centre.

Motorcycle cop will sit, mounted, in public pedestrian walkway leading to shopping plaza area and gun for speeders and yellow lihgt violators (despite a "red light camera" alreadu in operation here. Double dipping your pocketbook?)

Doulas St, under the Carey Rd. pedestrian overpass.

Nasty trick speed trap. Usually used on sunny summer days by Saanich Police Motorcycle cops (they never let you off with a warning like other cops sometimes do). As Douglas curves past the WalMart, and turns into the divided Island Highway, it passes under the Galloping Goose Trail pedestrian overpass. Technically, the limit is still a stupid 50KPH for about another 1/2 kilometer ’til you pass Harriet Rd. on the right, where it changes to 70KPH. As you might guess, normal traffic speed by the overpass is about 70-80KPH. The biker cop will hide behind the overpass, in a small paved path on the right that’s hidden by blackberry bushes. Just keep your eyes open as you approach and pass the overpass and don’t hit it until you reach the 70KPH sign and you start to drop down the backside of a slight hill that takes you out of line-of-sight. With Saanich cops, you always have to be wary at the end of the month. Ticket quota? … what ticket quota?
