Arnold, California Speed Traps
State Route 4
Between Dorrington and Bear Valley on highway 4. There is a straight downhill stretch followed with a rise. You can see the entire distance. At the bottom there is a turn out. An office will step out into the middle of the road and wave you in. The last time I got caught there, there were 4 cars. This is not a heavily traveled road, but you are easy pickens.
State Highway 4 near Meko Drive
One of the few very straight, safe, shallow dip with clear view stretchs with no cross streets where normal drivers may pass cars & RV’s that go overly slow during many miles of hills and curves. Problem is the slow traffic guns it on the straight forcing passing vehicles to exceed speed limit to get around. CHP is taking advantage of this by hiding in small turnouts amongst trees (there are three on .8 mi stretch). There are very few places to pass on Hwy 4 above Murphys, and CHP haunts all the best. Described spot is especially lucrative for cash strapped Calaveras County. Locals aware of speed trap are adapting by passing trucks and slow tourists in less safe/less patrolled sections of the hwy … a risky policy I fear. Be alert for dangerous passing on Hwy 4 in Calaveras and Alpine County as frustration piques.
