Barstow, California Speed Traps
Interstate 15 near Exit Number Hodge Road
I-15 Northbound usually just North of Hodge Road between Victorville and Barstow. 5AM-7AM. CHP sits in the dirt well off the shoulder with lights out. You won’t see him unless you happen to catch the reflection of the sticker on the trunk.
Interstate 15 near Mile Marker 170
16 miles west of Barstow, behind a sand mountain
Interstate 15 near Interstate 40
High CHP activity in the Barstow area, shortly after the I-15/I-40 split going northbound, there is a spot in the median that an all-white CHP vehicle will be sitting in, and the officer uses hand-held instant-on radar. I drove past him and saw his radar gun in hand, but my radar detector did not go off. You know what that means; he’s waiting for someone to come flying down so he can pull the trigger on him!
I-15 westbound, construction area
When coming from Las Vegas, NV and traveling westbound on the Interstate 15, be cautious in construction zones. Speed limit is 55 MPH. My radar detector picked up a K band alert from a CHP vehicle that was parked on the side of the freeway about one mile away in a construction zone.
I-40 both directions out to city limits
Barstow PD can be frequently spotted hiding in on the median in the shade under the overpasses. In the California deserts overpasses are always traditional speedtrap locations both for local police and CHP. Barstow PD stopped me around midnight for burnt out license plate lights. Fortunately I was not speeding, and he let me go when it was clear I was not drunk or doing anything else illegal. Just keep in mind, burnt out lights etc. are the sort of nuisance infractions they look for when they need an excuse to go on a fishing expedition for bigger crimes. So keep your car in good shape!
