W. 6th Street Street near Mountain Avenue

Ontario, CaliforniaSep 15, 20070 Comments

Between Benson and Mountain Aves. immediately south of the 10fwy.

The police department has gone out of it’s way to build a speed trap known as an "orchard" (ripe for the picking). They’ve added intermittent planters along the center of the street around which you have to navigate your vehicle. They’ve also painted huge areas along the curbs to prohibit parking on either side of these planters (reason: you can’t fit two cars on either side of the center planters so they had to block it off). The net effect is that you’re totally blown away by all the lines jutting in and out along the curb marking where you must and mustn’t drive. The speed limit signs (which are 25mph where the rest of the city streets are 30mph or more) are posted directly across from the first planter at the entrance on either end of the street. This is so that you conveniently miss it while trying to figure out what the heck you’ve gotten yourself into. I’d never seen anything like it.

And while you’re trying to figure it out, you’ll most likely miss the motorcycle officer posted at the center T-intersection. He’ll be hiding behind a large fan palm conveniently planted at the corner of the T. He’ll be shooting you with a laser, aiming between the palm fronds, well hidden. With all the distractions on that street, you’re practically guaranteed to miss both the speed limit sign and the motorcop only to end up one of the many fallen. Just to investigate how that happened, I drove to my destination one block away, returned the same way, and he had another victim. Time lapsed, maybe 4 minutes.

Don’t forget, any strange looking street could be an "orchard". My brother, ex-LAPD cop (22 yrs of service), told me that many cities have orchards and if city funds are running low, the sargent tells them "hit the orchard" and presto, city coffers and quotas are filled in minutes. The ticket was $180. A conservative estimate of revenues would be 10 pigeons/day x $180+/pigeon x 30days/month = $54,000/month. I’s say that was a very attractive incentive to any city looking to quickly replace the water-like-money that flows through their collective fingers.

Commuting westbound on Jurupa before Etiwanda, you will be going down hill, the speed limit is 40 but as you go down the hill there is a motorcylce cop with a radar checking speed limits and I have seen one at least twice a week.

Haven Avenue near US Highway 10 Freeway

Ontario, CaliforniaJul 31, 20070 Comments

Haven Avenue is heavy with motorcycle police with radar from Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga south past the Ontario Airport to Jurupa Ave. Specifically past the 10 freeway it is 50mph and right under the tunnel it becomes 40mph and the police sit on Airport Drive.

Mills Circle near North Rochester Avenue

Ontario, CaliforniaMay 15, 20070 Comments

A momentary confusion between Mills Circle and Rochester Ave. can lead you to believe you are not speeding, but you are. The posted limit is 30 mph. Rochester I believe is 40 mph. Since these two run parallel each other, it’s easy to forget the slower speed requirement if you’re accustomed to traveling on Rochester. I got a $175 ticket here for going 41 mph. The bike cops have radar out and ready especially during evening rush hour. Be aware of this speed trap!
