I-5 North and South

Highway patrol set up traps from Weed to Yreka, where the 70mph zone goes to 65. I’ve had the same experience as others on this site related to officers exaggerating the speed they registered on their gun. I think the California legislature has forgotten this county and it’s the only way they can make money. the highway is in terrible shape through this stretch.

I-5 Northbound approaching S. Weed Blvd exit

CHP sits on the center median at the end of a long downhill grade where it is very easy to pick up speed. In my case, I was the last in a long line of cars. Since he couldn’t pull over everyone, he pulled over just me. Note: I am not positive about the exact location on I-5 relative to the exit; regardless, I-5 through the city of Weed should be treated as one big speed trap. Happy motoring!

Officer sits between lanes partially hidden from guard rails. When headed north they spot you just as you crest a small hill making it too late to slow down.

Going north the CHP pick you up around the DOT maintenance station on a flat open stretch in which there is clear road visibility for miles coupled with a subtle downgrade which makes 80 more appropriate than the 65 posted. Going south the CHP usually remain hidden on Military Pass Rd at the bottom of a substantial downgrade. Many times they depend on aircraft surveillance which is essentially a speedtrap. When I disagreed with the officer over my ticket, he stated that he didn’t actually see me speeding, but depended on the aircraFort
