Eads, Colorado Speed Traps
US Highway 287 near US Highway 287
Entrapment of "following too closely" traffic rule. Officer drives on 2-lane Hwy just below posted 65MPH speed limit. When you approach, he continues to slow down, then moves onto shoulder for you to pass at speed limit. After you pass, he pulls you over, says you "followed too closely", adds other alleged violations which he could not have observed, then "generously" issues a ticket for "ONLY" the following too closely rule. Ticket carries 4 points (reduced to 2 points by payment within 20 days by mail), costs $48.00, and seems to be used on out-of-state drivers ONLY. A good solid revenue item, used by Colorado state trooper at Eads, CO on popular US Hwy 287 (alternate route between Denver and Amarillo). Heavy truck route, 2-lane road, open country, moderate traffic, no speeding involved. I think of this as a "market niche" for good solid revenue with no recourse or defense for the entrapped driver. Must be observed to be appreciated.
