Portland, Connecticut Speed Traps
Saw this for the first time today, 7/3/10: The police officer was sitting IN the intersection, Eastbound on Rt. 66 against the island. From that vantage point he could point the radar gun towards the bridge (people coming Eastbound), down Main St (people coming Southbound), AND down 66 (people coming Westbound)!!
The cop hides in the entrance to the Portland fairgrounds and has a reading on you as soon as you see him. Coming northbound, he gets you coming around the curve by the river and you cannot see him behind the trees. Coming southbound you also see him coming around a curve. I’ve passed by several times at 50 (speed limit: 35) and he hasn’t bothered me. Just go with the flow of traffic and don’t drive aggressively around here.
This whole stretch in Rocky Hill has 3-4 speed traps in it. Police frequently hide in a paved U-turn (this is easy to spot, and you can slow down when you see the turn and he won’t get you because of the knolls on either side). Police frequently hide at exits 23 and 22 also.
And, going southbound, look out for a ramp/driveway that merges into the right lane. It is not signed and between exits 24 and 23. Police could make a killing off of that one, but I do not know how often they use it, if at all.
Police car with Radar in use is in plain view of traffic coming over the Arrigoni Bridge from Middletown into Portland. Speed Limit on the Bridge is 35 mph.
