Washington, District of ColumbiaApr 16, 201221 Comments

Radar speed camera in white van or other unmarked vehicle. Speed limit is 50 MPH and they write 100 tickets per hour @ $125 each. Strictly about the money. Traffic flows 65-70 usually here but tickets are for 5 over and above. Only ticket single cars. Stay within a group of cars and no ticket. By yourself, everyone gets a ticket.

DC Metro police have two mobile camera vehicles or they will use squad cars and shoot radar on New York Ave. across from the National Arboretum. They generally have units facing both East and West. There are also multiple speed cameras located on New York as you proceed into the city.

Foxhall Rd. North, bet. Reservoir Rd. & Whitehaven Pkwy.

This is a mobile stainless steel "beehive" or "file-drawer" trap just before Whitehaven Pkwy. that is delivered before morning rush hour and retrieved after the evening rush hour. It issued warnings for a time, but the warning period ended before motorists received the warnings, so they received tickets as wel as the warnings!

Southbound I-295 near the sewage treatment facility

Washington, District of ColumbiaOct 31, 20111 Comments

This is a mobile speed camera enforcement location. Driving south on I-295, you’ll pass the two-mile advance green sign for the Beltway, then you’ll cross a small overpass and the road curves slightly to the left. Then you’ll see a small green sign for a weigh station. Slow down at this point (speed limit is 50 mph). Just past this sign, the guardrail on the right ends roughly where the trees end and there is a fairly small new concrete pad just off the shoulder. It’s hidden by the trees so that you won’t see it until you’re on top of it. At any given time you may find a cop car sitting on that concrete pad with the mobile speed camera attached to the front of the vehicle, but there’s no way to know whether the cop is there until you’re on top of the spot.

(If you want to look up this spot on a map, find Laboratory Road SW and draw an imaginary line to extend it as though it ran directly into I-295. The point where that imaginary line hits I-295 is pretty much exactly where the concrete pad is. It’s not visible on Google Maps’ satellite view nor on Google Street View due to outdated images.)
