Big Pine Key, Florida Speed Traps
South End of Bahia Honda Bridge, 36 Mile Marker
The Bahia Honda bridge is a 4 lane bridge after many miles of 2 lane road. It is very easy to open it up and pass many vehicles on the bridge. The speed limit is 55. Traveling south, the road curves at the end of the bridge and you do not see what is beyond that curve until you get there. There is almost always a trooper sitting there. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel to them.

As you come to the end of the bridge 2 lanes change to one. The state troopers are usually right in the median waiting for you.

Heading into Big Pine Key, the speed limit drops quickly from 55 to 45 to 35 as you approach a bridge in what appears to be the middle of no where. While this low speed limit once was a necessity, fences have since been erected to prevent the endangered Key deer from crossing the highway in this area. Enforcement of the 35 mph limit is common all the way through Big Pine, particularly at night.
