Athens, Georgia Speed Traps
State Highway Atlanta near Hobby Lobby area
Motorcycles cops are there to catch you leaving town as you come down the hill.
Barnett Shoals Road near State Highway 316
The speed limit is only 45 and it is a 4-lane road! Cops will sit either across from the Woodlands or across from BP and catch people coming around the corner/over the hill. People get pulled over all the time on this road so watch out!
State Highway 316 near Athens 10 Loop
Athens is a college town which houses University of Georgia. Basically any time there are going to be a lot of students coming back to athens (such as sunday afternoon/night or after a holiday) they have cops up there hidden in hard to see locations. The part which most obviously identifies this as a deliberate speed trap is the fact that the speed limit on HWY 316 is 65 everywhere except that it drops to 55 for a small stretch just before the turnoff that all UGA students would be taking. There is no change in road conditions that would merit such a speed limit change, in fact this stretch only has inlets with somewhat controlled access (entrance lanes) and there aren’t many of those either. The rest of 316 has uncontrolled inlets all over the place and still a 65 mph limit. There are various locations where the cops give tickets that are really tricky such as when people come over a hill only a short while after the speed limit has changed.
10 Loop near Exit Number Athens / Winder Mall exit
This speed trap is located on the loop 10 bypass as you are heading from Oconee County into Clarke County. As you cross counties the speed limit changes from 65mph to 55mph and is located on a down hill. I have been caught by this one because cops will either sit under the bridge or at the bottom of the hill. Be careful because they are they all the time.
College Station Road near 10 Loop
The speed limit on College Station Road going to campus changes from 35 to 45 right before you cross the bridge. It’s a huge hill, and it’s hard to stay under the limit without having your feet firmly on the brakes. It’s probably the biggest speedtrap in Athens. The ridiculously low limit of 35 (five lane road which connects East Athens to the University of Georgia, mind you!) will never be raised because the ACC government makes a lot of money off of it. So many people get caught in this one. Be careful!
