Garden City boasts to be a tax Free town, making up much of its revenue by fining violators for traffic violations. My car broke down hwy 17 due to a bad alternator. A cop spotted me having trouble and gave me a warning for driving with no head lights and a ticket for no proof of insurance. I missed the date for the court appearance and was sent a notice that I must pay $85 dollar fine or lose my license. I went to pay the court clerk and when I complained that the amount seemed high, she suggested setting another date to see the judge. When I went before the judge he asked me if had insurance. I produced the insurance card and he immediately dismissed the no insurance charge. He also went on to fine me $167 or ten days for contempt of court because I missed the first date on the ticket. I have since heard of other people being stopped for broken tail lights, cracked windshields, etc and where also fined outrageous amounts. Pass the word on to be carefull when driving through this town.
