US Highway 41 near Milner city limits

Milner, GeorgiaMay 12, 20080 Comments

The Milner city limits include approximately one mile of Highway 41, which is a four-lane highway. Traffic speed is usually 60 mph or slightly higher. The Milner Police patrol this VERY regularly, as does the GSP. Speeders beware! Drive at 60 mph or below.

Radar activity is almost continuous. This is a tiny town and the cops have little else to do. Radar detector is mandatory, but one of the cops is wise to them. He uses the gun "off/on" hapless victims.

Town wrote 89 tickets during November 04! Be careful and use that detector!

The city of Milner is the classic example of a speed trap. None of the city limits contain US 41 except for a small strip that was annexed purely for the purposes of setting up "speed enforcement". None of the cops but the chief are full time Milner cops, allowing them to get around the state law requiring a department to have full time officers in order to run radar. I had the pleasure of getting these theive’s radar permit pulled because their "officers" like to hide behind trees to run radar, right in the face of the state law that prohibits such activities. However, I suspect that they are probably back up to their tricks again. They seem to have a favorite spot at the bottom of a hill going southbound on US 41 right before the bridge over the railroad. Aside from that, they primarily run moving radar, and love to pull over multiple people by clocking the first person in a string of cars, citing the following people simply because they "looked" like they were driving the same speed as the person they clocked. If you are cited, immediately have the case transferred to state court outside of Lamar county. You do have the right to a fair trial, and I can pretty much guarentee that you won’t get one anywhere within Lamar county. The lady judge in Milner is nowhere near impartial, and won’t even let you finish presenting your case before she’s ready to impose your fine on you. The judge and cops are VERY ignorant of state law; I had to point out the law to the judge on some issues (I am NOT kidding!) Took the State Patrol finding the city’s activities illegal to get the ticket overturned.

Milner tends to run radar exclusively on weeknights, the cops don’t even seems to be around during the day on weekends. Especially watch out on Friday afternoons when Silver Dollar raceway in Reynolds, Ga (about another 30 miles to the south off of US 341) is running test and tunes. This is by far the most direct route for people wanting to get from Atlanta to Reynolds, and they, as well as the Lamar County Sheriff, seem to capatalize on this. My suggestion, avoid this road like the plague unless you MUST travel it for some reason. I-75 can be used to bypass Milner, but at the expense of having to drive about 15-20 miles out of the way.
