Cairo, Illinois Speed Traps
Illinois may as well put up a toll booth. I travel often between Chicago and MS. If you’re Northbound; MO limit is 70, IL is 65. Currently there is a cone zone near the border – do NOT speed thru there, They love those $375 + cost tix.
In general tho, they sit in a lot of hiding places, just over a hill, behind bushes in the median. I have the best radar detector you can get, and I set the cruise at 68 till I get thru that area.
Anywhere in the city limits of Cairo police cars sit along Hwy 51 enforcing the 30 MPH zone. Absolutely no leeway is given. Contrary to what some believe they do not target out of state drivers as nearly everyone I know locally has received a citation. They tend to sit near 28th St or 18th St but can be anywhere at anytime. Don’t even drive 31 MPH anywhere in Cairo.
Cairo Police sit on ramp and ticket out of state cars for speeding in construction Zone even when all traffic is going at the same speed and no signs in the right lane. Don’t believe Cairo Police have jurisdiction on I-57
Received a citation for 40 in a 30, I was driving 30. “With all due respect sir, there’s no way I was driving 40.” Got my court date, showed up to fight the ticket, no arresting officer. Case dismissed.
65 mph posted on and after bridge right lane, 55 mph construction speed limit posted after bridge on left lane only- not visible from right lane in heavy traffic ;received $375 ticket in work zone with 2 other vihecles
