Cairo, Illinois Speed Traps

speed limit is low, 30, and both city police & county sherrifs patrol constantly. No leeway given. Often city police set up traps outside of city limits north of town.

coming into state of Illinois from Missouri where speed limit is 70mph. Up a bridge and traveling downhill into construction site at 55 mph. Reduction of speed to construction site was not posted miles ahead to allow you the time to slow your rig down and officer sat at bottom of hill clocking people and pulled over 3 of us simultaneously. Fines doubled

Officer pulled us after going through town. Claimed 42 in a thirty zone. Sign said 40, but the area is known for rapid sneaky speed limit changes. Wife not sure how fast she was really going, but at 50, it is her first ticket ever.
Ticket is hand filled in as "local ordinance violation" rather than in the "________mph in a ______ zone" with the Illinois code that was printed on ticket. The officer offered to accept payment for ticket in cash. We declined.

I’ve been caught numerous times on Illinois Route 3 just north of Cairo. Usually they use various unmarked cars and take advantage of the speed limit rapidly decreasing from 55 to 35 as you enter the city.

cairo city police will pull you over, out of the city limits of cairo. fight this ticket! no jurisdiction!
