Carbondale, Illinois Speed Traps

I live south of Carbondale and drive into town on US 51/Illinois Avenue most days. North of the Pleasant Hill intersection on US 51 heading into Carbondale/by the SIU sports arena there is more often than not a cop (always a toss up between university police, CPD, and ISP) sitting in the road on Innovation Drive, the road that goes to the SIU Research Park. People often get stopped and it’s clear they don’t really have anything better to do.

I am a delivery driver and long time local who frequently drives from my restaurant south into town north on Wall Street. Starts as a wide 2 lane road with bike lanes at 45 MPH with a quick decrease to 30 MPH down a hill right before the massive East Campus parking lot. More times than not there is either a university or city cop parked diagonally in the southwest corner of the lot, obstructed by trees so you can’t see until they’ve already got you.

Early morning hours between 6am-830am to get working public on the way to work. One car hides on the east side of a bldg as east bound traffic comes by on a way east bound street. ..300 blk e walnut

Carbondale police are parking in the entry drive of the Furniture King which is on the frontage road on the south side of 13. There is a wooded area that blocks the view to the south until it opens up near the businesses along the frontage Road. When they clock someone speeding they drive through ditch between between the frontage road and route 13 to make the stop. They got two this morning. End of the month quota time for the Carbondale police.

Carbondale police frequently radar along this stretch of eastbound Hwy 13 between Marion St. and Wall St. just east of the railroad tracks. Traffic is often congested just west of here and it tends to "open up" around this spot where motorists tend to drive faster. It is still 35 MPH through here, they’ll get you if you even barely exceed that.
