De Witt, Iowa Speed Traps
1ST Street and 6th ave.
South end of Can City on 6th Ave next to railroad tracks. Police will set there in the early am, trying to catch speeders heading out of town.
East edge of De Witt in front of high school
A small sign says speed limit 25 on days school children are present. The entire length of the road is 35mph prior to that area and has been for years. The area is 11th street De Witt starting about the BP gas station and extends past the Congregational Church when you are headed east out of town.
They patrol there and sometimes sit in the church parking lot or hide on the school grounds. Most days you will see somebody pulled over. It’s quite easy to forget. There should be a flashing sign, they’ve made enough money to afford one.
In the Median on Rt. 30
Very often, throughout the week the city of De Witt police are setting in the median on Rt. 30 which is technically “in their jurisdiction”. They will be there at all hours and will set without parking lights on at night….isn’t that illegal? In addition to setting on Rt. 30, they also do the same thing on Hwy 61. Both of these are 4 lane minimum access highways.
