Prairie City, Iowa Speed Traps
Speed Camera used on Highway 163 near the exit/entrance from town. The camera is not in the city. According to reports it may be mounted in a trailer near the road. Apparently there is a small sign when approaching Prairie City on the highway but who can see it.
Note: IA163 is a four lane road that does not go through the city.
The town of Prairie City is nestled in a bend of State Highway 163, about 18 miles southeast of Des Moines. Watch for speed traps any time the town is visible to you. They are set up any time of the day but are especially bad after dark.
The town cop sits in the median. You can see him from the first prairie city exit if you are travelling eastbound so it’s not a big deal. However, if you are travelling westbound you can’t see him until it’s too late because you crest a hill and he is right there probably 50 feet from you. Very tricky at night.
