Topsham, Maine Speed Traps
Winter Street near Bridge Street
Winter St is a great bypass of the traffic in Downtown Topsham and around the Topsham Fair Mall. Unfortunately, a speed trap has been set up on it to catch drivers going even slightly over the speed limit. They normally sit in the area of the Bridge St turnoff. Sometimes a State Trooper sits in a driveway between the Bridge St turnoff and the Topsham Fair Mall Rd.
Bridge Street near Single Lane Bridge
Well, the problem has been sort of fixed recently, but the Topsham Fair Mall just opened up a back entrance recently during some expansion. Because of that, Bridge St. is a great shortcut between Route 1(major tourist highway) and the strip mall. The problem though is that it’s a 25mph zone due to it being a residential zone. Problem is, the road is long and straight, and has good visibility. I frequently do 30-35 down this road and have no issues stopping for kids.
They tried to solve this problem by adding a few speed bumps, but now I just slow down for the bumps and then do about 40-45 between the bumps to make up for lost time. Doesn’t exactly solve the problem. If anything… it perpetuates it.
Most often any cars on this road will be in what looks like a residential driveway. I got tagged in the morning on the way to work, but they are there in the afternoon too.
I guess too many people have complained. I certainly understand since it’s a residential area, but it really is the quickest way from point A to point B… at least before the speed bumps were installed.

3 locations: #1 Route 196 going north from route 1. Going over the overpass of I-95 the limit is 35 MPH traffic merges to two lanes . They usually have an unmarked car using laser detection and he calls the other cars, usually three of them to catch you. #2 route 196 going south on the new bypass, limit is 55MPH then drops to 35MPH, they use the same technique, a unmarked car in the middle shooting radar them calling the marked cars to chase you. #3 route 201 south, limit 50MPH dropping to 35MPH. Same technique again. They will issue a $124 ticket and they will appear in court to make sure they get their fines.
