Ashby, Massachusetts Speed Traps
State Highway 119 near School
Cop sits in school parking lot with the other vehicles. Speed limit goes from 40 to a 20 when the lights are on. I have several friends who drive this road and the cop writes everyone he stops. Look in the parking lot for the police car. Look hard because it doesn’t have lights on the roof.
Turnpike Road
The speed limit is 35. The cop sits on the side of the road in a driveway. You won’t see him until the blue lights come on. The cop car doesn’t have lights on the roof so it makes it that much harder to see.
Greenville Road near State Route 31
Greenville Road has a speed limit of 45. It is easy to 60+ on this road beacuse it is wide open and straight. Police sit on the side hiding in the tall grass. Watch out for the black unmarked. Its always on this road.
State Route 119, 4/10ths of a mile from Ashburnham Town Line
For westbound travelers, just over the crest of the hill where the westbound passing lane ceases to exist, Ashby police regularly sit in wait for automobiles to come over the top of the hill. Speeding is common at this point because of the previously mentioned passing lane. In direct opposition of Massachusetts State Law, which says that an office must visually estimate that a vehicle is speeding prior to activating radar, some (if not all) of Ashby police officers sit here with radar activated, despite the fact that anyone caught speeding has already driven through the entire town of Ashby and is less than half a mile from reaching the Ashburnham town line. Basically, they are collecting a salary from Ashby while (possibly) making the roads of Ashburnham a bit safer (if you assume that speed affects safety). This is a classic example of police officer acting as tax collector.
