State Route 30 east, between Exeter and Dartmouth

Newton, MassachusettsMar 01, 20020 Comments

Enforced mainly eastbound. The posted limit on route 30 until route 16 (Washington Street) is 35. After this light, the road climbs a long hill, and the limit drops to 30, though the road is just as wide with similar sightlines. The road dips after cresting the hill and goes around a shallow curve. The police sit just beyond the street at the bottom of this dip, which is Exeter street, and the car is pretty well obscured. They figure that after cresting the hill, one will keep ones foot on the gas and it is very easy to go 40 without realizing it at this point. THe cop pulls someone over, writes the ticket, and then goes around the block for another catch. The limit should be 35, since it is so on other portions of route 30 in Newton. This speedtrap is mainly enforced in the evening, but can be out at any time of day.

Beacon Street between Hammond Pond Parkway and Newton Center

Newton, MassachusettsOct 01, 20000 Comments

This is stretch that is straight and wide. But the posted speed is 25 mph. One can easily do 50 mph and the newton police know this. They trap both directions, but west bound is most popular. The reason is that as one looks westward towards newton center with all its lights and stores, a police car parked on the side with its radar can easily get missed. The police car is about a block before the light into Newton Center. My radar unit which is an old passport has been good about detecting them.
