Interstate I-96 near Livernois Avenue

Detroit, MichiganOct 12, 20050 Comments

Almost all of I-96 EB past Telegraph is a construction zone w/ speed limit 45. After you pass Davison Ave on EB I-96, you’ll go through a slight curve, cross W. Chicago, and then right under the Livernois overpass there is a Mich. State Cop parked in the dark. Livernois is a big road, so the overpass is quite wide, meaning that the cop sits in a large shadow of darkness, and its very difficult to spot the cop. Once you’ve discerned him, it’s too late. This is a very bad speed trap, since fines are doubled, and extra points are added. I got 70/45, but it sounds worse than it actually was. The average flow of traffic in this part of the freeway is still about 65 mph, despite the 45 mph limit.
Enforcement varies from month to month – In Aug/Sept, I saw MSP cops all over this part of the freeway, but now in Oct. I seldom see any cops around here.

Mt. Elliot Road

Detroit, MichiganAug 25, 20040 Comments

There is/was a cop-shop (where they get gas) on Mt. Elliot right before it turns and you get to Caniff. Mt. Elliot is usually pretty lawless, but they’re always pulling off side streets or turning off of 8 mile. Beware they just seem to show up out of nowhere.

I-75N and Woodward Ave. just before the ramp to I375

Detroit, MichiganJun 09, 20030 Comments

When I75 northbound passes Ford Field just before the ramp takes you to northbound I375, there is a small hiding place for a cop to sit on the right hand side of the road. Mostly unmarked Detroit Police and some MI State Police sit there at night looking to catch people exiting the ramp at 65-85mph. The speed limit is 55mph, but with people in a rush and trying to merge and pass trucks to get on to the ramp the speed limit is ignored. The cop is looking to catch that guy speeding and merging at the last minute, because at night and even in the daytime, if you pass them that fast you can not see them until it is way too late.
