US Highway 31 near State Route 104

Spring Lake, MichiganAug 22, 20070 Comments

US 31 just north of the Grand River bridge, about 1/2 mile. A Grand Haven cop will sit in the median watching those heading NB. This is a situation where most of the traffic heading north just spent the last 5 miles in slow moving blvd town traffic where the posted limit of 35 is rarely reached. Once a motorist crosses the bridge the speed limit jumps to 70mph, but many impatient drivers seize the opportunity to bury the pedal. Also a note to SB motorist, a cop sits at the on-ramp on just over on the otherside, this is the on-ramp from Van Wagoner Rd.

Police will park behind the overpass approach clocking Southbound traffic or very occasionally on the entrance ramp watching Northbound.

Police will sit in the parking lot of the Marina just past the Holiday Inn and clock Eastbound traffic. You are coming down a large bridge approach and can generate a lot of "energy speed" – traffic ticket jargon for "you’re just going too darn fast". They just got new cars in 2007 with the low-profile lights making it harder to tell them apart from a parked marina customer.

Just as you exit from US31 into Spring Lake the speed limit drops from 50 to 35 going down a hill. The police sit at the bottom on either side of M-104 and will pull you over for as little as 3-4 mph over the 35 mph speed limit. They are mostly looking for drunks as it is a major revenue for this area.
